I'm always looking for good advice on leadership and career development that's written by women for women. Career GPS by Ella L. J. Edmondson Bell fits the bill - especially for young women or women starting corporate careers.

As is often the case, Bell's guidance is focused on engaging the greatness in others and strengthening personal greatness with a heavy dose of career advice on topics including:

* Choosing a career path (including the question of whether an extreme career is right for you)
* Job search strategies for the 21st century
* The importance of global assignments
* Assessing the value of variious career moves

If you have a protege, daughter, friend, niece or colleague who is at career-start in her corporate career, this is a particularly valuable resource.

Rating:
The corporate landscape has changed over the last twenty years, but it's still challenging for many women to detach from old corporate mores that prevent them from career advancement. Career GPS seeks to highlight and educate women career seekers what's required to form and obtain the right career. The book provides an experiential approach and outlines what it takes to perform and think like an executive while not losing one's authentic self.

Dr. Bell walks the reader through her experiences - the good, the bad, and the ugly - that kept her from thinking she was worthy of advancement. Whether it was her background or preconceived notions of what success should be for a woman, she learned to recognize her worth, and she achieved tremendous success including becoming an Associate Professor at the Tuck School of Business at Dartmouth University. Her insight is woven into each chapter which takes a step-by-step view of how to craft a fulfilling career.

The book provides many stories to illustrate the highlights of each chapter as well as a chapter summary for key takeaways. In some cases the material may be basic for readers familiar with career search techniques (e.g. how to search online/career boards, social networking etiquette, winning the interview) but for someone who has not seen, heard, or read, all the career tools advice out there, this is a good overview. The real treasure of the book is Chapter 5 - Relationships.

Often people think that keeping your nose to the grindstone equates to getting noticed in the workplace. In fact, Bell points out practical advice she received when she was starting out, "Early in your career you're paid for what you do, later you're paid for whom you know." This truth is applicable to anyone not just women. The concept is further developed in terms of outlining how to build your brand awareness with others.

Being noticed at work requires help - sponsors, allies, and anyone you can partner with to create your buzz. Careers get stalled when people don't socialize themselves enough to be top of mind especially for women who already have to fight through a male dominated career network. They get lost in the shuffle wondering why their hard work and long hours haven't paid off. This chapter is not simply another "it's who you know" summary - this chapter has depth and will force you to review and realign what you're doing to build your presence and influence others.

The book is broader than the subtitle implies in terms of career guidance. Bell does a good job of wrapping things up with perspective - you have to be balanced in work and life to stay self-aware, and be willing to change when things aren't working. As the book's theme is woven throughout - your career, like life, is constantly shifting and moving in different directions. You need tools to make sure you're on track (a GPS) to maintain the right destination to achieve the success you deserve.

We bought a fixer-upper. There were a couple of anchor trees, but we did not know what to do. We consulted a couple of landscape architects, but they were giving us common, canned ideas. With this book, we were able to tell them what we wanted and then the architect we chose was able to give us a plan we loved! Thank you Sunset!

Review by Theseus for Italy: The New Domestic Landscape: Achievements and Problems of Italian Design
Rating:
Produced by the Museum of Modern Art and Cento Di, Florence, this is an exhaustive, scholarly, intelligent, and fun examination of the dynamics of Italian modern design.

This book is ambitious at over 400 pages, with over 200 illustrations, and over 20 color plates. For the most part, it contains useful objects that are also objects of art -- furniture, appliances, utensils; also captured are some "pure" artistic objects, sketches, posters; many of the contributors look at objects in their contexts, thus spurring the depiction of floorplans, interior design concepts, and installations.

About half the book is divided into two categories: Objects and Environments. There are also 10 Historical and Critical articles, including Portoghesi on Art Nouveau in Italy, dell'Arco on Futurism, Cominotti on Italian Design and Social-Economic Planning, Celant on Radical Architecture, and Tafuri on Utopian design.

Thus, a book visually rich and intellectually pithy that values both text and image.

This CD is not meant to be for dancing or whistling--it is for the imagination. It is great for those times of contemplation, creativity or meditation. The music is outstanding, multi-layered and diverse. This is not a drone-like dirge. It is more like a series of interesting walks along the beach, with and without people. The reviewer above likens it to Mike Oldfield, but it is not really that forward. I would say it is more like work by Kevin Keller, Jeff Pearce or Ma Ja Le (Paul Vnuk, jr.). In the end, it is really Eric Wollo. He has definitely established his own voice and has added another wonderful sound magician to the Spotted Peccary label' s group of talented musicians.

This CD is not meant to be for dancing or whistling–it is for the imagination. He has definitely established his own voice and has added another wonderful sound magician to the Spotted Peccary label’ s group of talented musicians.

I had been searching for a nice edging for my new shade garden, found this product on Amazon and ordered it right away - it was perfect. However, after I placed the order, I saw the same edging for sale at KMart for $1.99 a piece, but it was white, not the green color I wanted. I averaged out the price and am paying a little over $2.00 more on Amazon. After I received the edging and placed it around my garden, I was very pleased and decided to order more. I thought I'd shop around to see if I could find a better price for the GREEN edging, but to no avail, so I'll purchase it from Amazon again. On the bright side, I'm not paying for shipping nor sales tax and I AM very happy with this edging.

If you like Patrick O'hearn or David Helpling you're gonna love Eric Wollo and his great album "Emotional Landscapes". Check out the Spotted Peccary website for some extended versions of three of his songs from this album. If you're into new age/ambient, don't hesitate, do yourself a favor and grab this CD. A wonderful discovery!!

Beautifully sparse and evocative soundscapes perfect for whatever cerebral tasks one may be embarked upon. Subtle melodies meld with cool auras and unimposing textures in an entirely satisfying love letter from Europe's far northern latitudes. It's very similar to Wollo's previous album Wind Journey.
